Key Broke in the Lock?
Keys, whether it’s your home, business, or car, go through a lot. After many years of use and abuse, it’s no surprise that sometimes the key can break. When the key breaks in the lock, however, then it becomes an issue.
If this should happen to you, the first thing you should do is call your locksmith. While waiting, there are a few things you might be able to do to help out before they get there.
If you were lucky, the key broke at a position where you can see it sticking out of the lock. If this is the case, try and pull it out. If it’s close, try and use pliers to pull it out.
Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. If you’re in this unlucky situation, there’s little you can do to get the key out. You’re welcome to try and get through to the key with a flathead screwdriver if you have one available, but it’s definitely not recommended. If you try and fail, you risk ruining the lock completely and it can be pricey to buy an entire replacement lock.
Essentially, if your key has broken in the lock, the best thing you can do is sit and wait for your locksmith. If you find yourself in a pressing situation—there’s a baby or animal in the car or maybe you’re in a bad part of town—let your locksmith know and they will get to you as soon as humanly possible.
