Could your Business Benefit from Covert Camera Installation?

A few months ago, we received a call from a distraught manager at the corporate offices of a steel manufacturer. He suspected that one of his 200 employees was stealing from the company, but there was no way he could prove who the offender was. We came out, surveyed the office building, and recommended the installation of covert cameras.

What exactly are covert cameras?

They are cameras that are installed in inconspicuous areas of a building—maybe in the exit sign, a clock, or even a smoke detector. They can be installed at night after everyone has left the office or during the day while everyone is working. In the case of the steel manufacturing company, we installed them during the day. The employees just thought we were on the premises in order to add an exit sign near a doorway.

But…isn’t it illegal to watch people without their knowledge?

Here’s the deal with covert cameras: you can’t install them in a way that would allow you to watch people while they work without their knowledge—that is definitely illegal. However, you can install them near doorways, in high security areas, or in “common” areas where people just pass through and don’t actually work. That is what the steel manufacturing company did—placed one above a main exit doorway.

Within a week of installing their covert cameras, the manager at the steel manufacturing company called to let us know that they caught their culprit. An employee was caught walking out of the building with a company laptop.

Upon confrontation, the employee confessed to his crime and was terminated from his position.

Video footage taken by a covert camera cannot be used in a court of law or as police evidence (because the person being filmed did not give their consent). However, if you believe that one of your employees is stealing from you, then it could be just the tool you need to catch them in the act. They don’t have to know that you can’t take the footage to the police. Usually the fact that you caught it on camera is enough for them to leave their position peacefully.
